MA in Professional Writing
and Editing
The English M.A. Program in Professional Writing and Editing is multidimensional,
offering writers and editors the opportunity to develop and hone knowledge
and skills in six domains:
* Professional Courses provide hands-on instruction
in practices common to professional contexts.
* Writing in Nonfiction Genres offers guided instruction
focusing on specific genres and audiences, often through workshop
approaches.
* Research and Theory in Writing prompt new perspectives
on professional writing through current research on collaborative
writing, organizational authorship, workplace cultures, composition
theory, and other topics.
* Literary Studies offer an array of courses in literature,
literary criticism, literary theory, film, folklore, and cultural
studies to broaden knowledge of literary practices and traditions.
* Research Methodology explores state-of-the-art on-line
techniques within a tradition of critical research.
* Thesis
offers the opportunity for intensive work with a faculty director
and two readers to craft research on a focused issue, linked essays
on a theme, "how-to" discourse in an area of expertise,
or some other project. |

MFA in Creative Writing Nonfiction
In addition to the existing concentrations
in poetry and fiction, we now offer an MFA with a concentration in
creative nonfiction. Like poetry and fiction, this is a 48-semester
hour program that embraces workshops in nonfiction writing, the reading
of nonfiction as literature, perhaps other forms of literature courses,
and numerous electives that will allow students to fine tune the program
to their backgrounds and goals. Beverly Lowry has been named the director
the nonfiction program.
Applicants should mirror the requirements for the existing two concentrations
except where original fiction or poetry is required, substitute a
creative nonfiction writing sample. The whole application package,
then, would include the app form itself, a creative nonfiction writing
sample of about 20 pages (and preferably two different, whole works
rather than fragments of a longer work), a personal goal statement
explaining your interest in the creative nonfiction degree, as well
as undergraduate and any applicable graduate transcripts, two letters
of reference, and an analytical nonfiction writing sample such as
a literature course paper.
The deadline for applying is January 2nd, and all applications should
be received as soon after that as practical. If you also plan to apply
for a graduate teaching assistantship, your application for the M.F.A.
program must be postmarked by January 2nd. You should send your application
directly to the Graduate Admissions Office.
