The Oxford English Dictionary defines an essay as "a composition of moderate length on any particular subject, or branch of a subject; originally implying want of finish . . . but now said of a composition more or less elaborate in style, though limited in range." The term dates to 1580, when Montaigne's Essais were first published.

More recently, the American Heritage Dictionary has defined the essay as a "a short literary composition on a single subject, usually presenting the personal views of the author." Following these leads, we have presented hypertexts in this section that are explicitly in the literary tradition and with a marked personal viewpoint, in contrast to the more general articles.
