The
English Department at George
Mason University
boasts one of the most comprehensive and vertically integrated
programs in nonfiction writing in the United States. At the
undergraduate level, our concentration
in nonfiction writing offers students the opportunity
to specialize in creative nonfiction/feature writing, professional
writing, or digital writing, all the while taking courses in
cultural studies, literature, film and media studies, folklore,
and other areas. While preparing for these upper-division courses,
students may take advanced composition courses or writing intensive
courses in other disciplines that are part of our writing-across-the
curriculum program, recently ranked
number one in the country for public universities.
At the
graduate level, students have three options. For those
students pursuing an M.A. in another field, our Certificate
in Professional Writing and Editing
affords focused instruction in writing techniques and approaches
that will augment one’s prowess in that field.
Students
interested in enhancing their knowledge in professional writing
may pursue our M.A.
in Professional Writing and Editing, taking courses
focused primarily on workplace writing theory and practice.
This program also includes an array of courses in cultural studies,
literature, film and media studies, folklore, and other areas,
taught by world-class
faculty.
Students seeking careers as creative nonfiction writers can
pursue the M.F.A.
in Creative Nonfiction. A part of our nationally
ranked M.F.A Program, the M.F.A in Creative Nonfiction enables
students to take courses in Fiction and Poetry, too, along with
the array of courses in literature, cultural studies, and other
areas mentioned above. Frequent guest lecturers drawn from Washington,
D.C.’s exemplary professional writing talent help place
this program among the best in the country.
