"Writing Skills: Enhancement for Advancement" |
Unpaid internship: graduate student or senior English major needed to teach a writing skills class to administrative staff at a substance abuse counseling agency. The class will be called "Writing Skills: Enhancement for Advancement". The goal isn't to write the Great American Novel, but rather to help staff learn to write a well-constructed paragraph. The class would be held about twice a month for an hour, and would probably run for 6 sessions to allow students the opportunity to practice writing skills. The class would need to be held during normal business hours at Jermantown Road in Fairfax, but the specific days and times could be worked around your schedule. The class would cover such things as: constructing a coherent paragraph that focuses on one topic or subject, basic spelling and punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and other basic tools of good writing. Computer skills will not be taught, as all writing will be done in class by hand. The intern will develop the curriculum and writing exercises. We need someone who is organized, calm and patient, and able to make learning fun. The intern who is selected must undergo two interviews, extensive background checks, and a TB test, but the intern will not be expected to pay for these requirements. Time commitment: Two hours per month, plus preparation time. Contact (preferably by email): Kay Rankin, Coordinator, Volunteer and Intern Program, Alcohol and Drug
